What Is a Specimen Container?

A specimen container is a convenient way to collect and store biological specimens. They are available in different sizes and can be sterile or non-sterile. Some are even disposable. In addition to their versatility, these containers are easy to clean and use, and are sturdy enough to be easily transported. They are also available with lids.

To properly identify the specimen, the patient's name, date of birth, and assigned hospital number must be written on the specimen container. The names must match those on the patient's requisition form and accompanying paperwork. Additionally, additional parts of the specimen must be identified by the pathology department. These may include a biopsy strip, an x-ray, a urine sample, or a blood sample.

Anatomic pathology specimen containers should be stored at room temperature. Exceptions to this rule include cytology fluid, which should be refrigerated. The use of refrigerated specimen containers is critical in maintaining the integrity of the specimens. A specimen container should include instructions for storage and transport of specimens, including information regarding preservatives.

Some specimens must be infused with anticoagulant before collection. Special collection tubes are required for some tests. These must be requested in advance.
